Sorry its been sooo long...Here's a quick update......My hair at nine months and two weeks!

2 month Update...:)

Ok y'all. I know I've been MIA but this way due to a series of unfortunate events. I am back to tell you how my babies are doing.

I had been putting bantu knots in my hair on weekends in an attempt to achieve neater tighter roots. I did it after a wash and took me roughly around 2-3 hours(with breaks in between)) to complete.

To be honest I wasn't  exactly a fan of the unravelled look but I rolled with it. I am returning to it tonight with plans to style it tomorrow

Fast forward a few weeks
Visited the loctician. Guess What...

She used BEESWAX  in my hair. I can't begin to express how pissed I was. It looked good for awhile but anything thats stains pillowcases and clothes is a no-no. Besides I've heard stories of the foul odor smell that comes with it after awhile. People insisted on touching my hair over and over and over..Gosh I never knew it could get so annoying.  I understand once or twice, but when the same persons feel that its ok to run their filth-infested, grimy phalanges through my already sticky hair, there's gonna be a problem.

Anyhoo  removing the beeswax  after 3 weeks was a challenge. In all selsun blue, dishwashing liquid, apple cider vinegar, baking soda and piping hot water did the trick. Never me again. I twisted my hair with ORS Lock and twist and that was a major fail. Hope fully the bantu knots will do the trick. I used motions Foaming wrap lotion to set it. :)

Update!!! Two weeks..:)

Its been two weeks yall!!! I have washed my hair twice...(once a week) and I can't help but say it does look a little shabby.(ok really shabby) I am very self conscious especially with fuzzy looking locs but I've grown to accept it. Its just a phase. After the first week I regretted washing my hair so early in my loc process due to  a lot of unraveling and needless to say a ton of fuzz.. However to disguise all of this my Mom put in some perm rods and i rocked the curly look all week.

In the middle of the week however I think the perm rods caused my hair to straighten out a bit. Sadly this caused huge holes in my locs. This I fixed with my latchhook tool with the interlock method i learnt  from dewdrop.

This week my hair is even fuzzier but I'm just going to roll with it. I did a bantu knot out after I washed it and unraveled it for church this mornig.

1 reason behind stigma and stereotyping of loc rockers in St.Lucia..

As i promised i have a brief explanation as to why so much negativity is attached to loc wearers here in St.Lucia. In the late seventies(lonnnggg before i was born) police in St.Lucia along with help from neighboring countries conducted a raid on St.Lucia's highest peak.

Apparently a tribe of "Rastafarians" (using this word sparingly) resided there and alot of crime went on. Most of all lots of marijuana was cultivated in LARGE AMOUNTS. Many of these locs carriers were arrested marijuana plants were destroyed and a new type of hatred toward loc carriers was created in my fair helen St.Lucia. Hopefully the generation with all this negative small-minded thinking is slowly ending. I remember asking someone( a bank worker) what was their personal issue with locs.."Nothing," she responded. however when i further inquired as to whether or not she'd hire a someone wearing locs to my dismay she said no. Needless to say she thought that it was an environment where there was a lot of customer interaction. "Society" doesn't accept it she said. Who or what makes up society?According to Oxford dictionary is " the aggregate of people living together in a more or less ordered community; the community of people living in a particular country or region and having shared customs, laws, and organizations:"  Everyone makes up society. We are all a part of it. If we start being more open minded one person at a time there can be a change in negativity and people won't be as scared be be their true selves. I've had people come up to me in the past two weeks commending me on my bravery. Like really?? Bravery, for being my own true self, embracing my god given hair texture. We shouldn't be scared to be who God designed. All in the name of acceptance?  Oh well....People have been bombarding me with questions like.. Whats happen when you're going to need a job? or Do you think someone is going to hire you with locs?  Well to answer that.....I am going to find a job..and YES someone will hire me..Not everyone thinks small.What's really sad is that most St.Lucians are black and having relaxed hair is more "normal" than natural hair.  Although more and more people are going back to natural hair I'm hoping that they don't do in the name of a fashion trend which would eventually end but they do it because they have  accepted who they are.

Loc'd Ladies only attract Loc'd guys: fact or fiction

Monday the 31st of January, my locs made a debut at school.. Many people seemed shocked that I had gone from a  wicked twistout (lasting 4 days) to a set of cornrows to locs within one week. The compliments, oohs and aahs lasted all week. However one negative comment which stayed with me was you are only going to attract thugs because guys with short "well groomed" hair do not like girls with locs. Well guess what??.

• Not everyone with locs are freeformers. I have seen people with scaly dandruff on short hair
• Guys with short hair have all types of desires...Relaxed, short, long, coily, braided.
• Thugs have all types of hair; looks may be deceiving
•  Why judge people by their hairstyle *eyeroll*?
• Who said I wanted a guy without locs ANYWAY!! (hehe just joking)

Right about now I'll be focusing on school  so I'll worry about this stuff later.....Meanwhile I'll be having chemistry with Chemistry :D.

Day one.....Proud New Mommy!!

Day before...Can you tell how excited I am?

So after years of lusting and wishing for locs I have my very own. Yesterday, 28th January 2011, my last loc was completed at 6:37 pm.I was very excited but i couldn't stop to marvel at them because I had to rush home in the south of the island(the loctician lives in the north). When i got home however I was in intense pain due to not eating, the long commute and the tightness of the interlocking. I had a few pictures taken before going to bed however. Do enjoy!

Since I have been talking about this for a verrrry long time my mother has accepted it. This doesn't mean she loves it however. My father on the other hand, hasn't seen them. Being an ex-police officer, his stigma and stereotype associated with locs haven't changed one bit.Here in St.Lucia, loc wearers are presumed to be a drug dealing-weed smoking-criminally mind-kinda thug. To avoid any negative comments to spoil my Saturday I kept them covered all morning till he went to work. I'll show them to him on Monday(fingers crossed)...

How it Feels

Though I AM really excited to have this started, I feel like I've worn locs for years.When neighbours see me and freak out I'm pretty lost as to why they act that way.(LoL)...Any reflective surface is my best friend, as my babies love to see themselves. The tight feeling has subsided and the gel my loctician used  dried, leaving a nasty white residue. This I won't worry about because I'm pretty sure when I wash my locs, it will come right off.. Last night I slept with a black stocking cap and its been on for a few hours to prevent HIL disease (Hand-In-Loc). My brothers adore my locs and are thinking of starting their own. All in all I know this neatness won't last for too long so I'm gonna enjoy it while it lasts.

Change of Heart Again!!

So hopefully this is my last Sunday as a loose Natural in a LONG TIME! I have been back and forth with my starter methods when my brother pointed out to me that I research so much I might end up making more errors so just go with the flow and enjoy my journey. I have changed my mind again as to my beginner locs and I'll suck it up and pay to have my hair interlocked( Can you tell I hate making decisions?)...However to have it maintained by her every month is pretty pricey so I'll see how that works out for me...

Meanwhile this is how I looked today!

I wore a twist out to church today. Its still not detangled and it wont be until-like Wednesday..This is something I am not looking forward to and one of the reasons I'm deciding to lock my hair. January 29th is the date folks!!!

Confusion!!!!

So as I approach the month end I am getting more and more confused by the minute....I am a very picky person and a bit of  a perfectionist. I visited a loctician last week and she told me that interlocing my hair would be the best choice. I have done ALOT OF RESEARCH and she telling me now thats starting my locs with braids would suuuuuuuch a long time to lock and what-not has sorta dampened my spirits. In addition the method that I had desired for maintainance is being bashed for breakage and thinning of locs....I am not happy about that. Braids, twist, interlocks hair is still gonna loc.  RIGHT?? So....what I am gonna do is wait until January 29th to get my hair braided up..Yes..Braided.. I do not have the type of money to get my locs started by interloc method....If anything I'll take it down and start it another way.

New Semester, New Opportunity, New Approach

So the holidays have come and gone and it is now time to return to school. Grades were not what I desired but hey, what can I say I'm supposed to pick up and learn so that the next time I'd do better. In the mean time this week has been one that was really meaningful..Emotions came out, i cleaned out my "closet" and i can safely say that 2010 baggage and has been opened dealt with and discarded. I am not one to make resolutions for new years but rather i have a theme throughout the year. This year my theme is CONSISTENCY.

CONSISTENCY with(in no particular order):

• My locs
• My Grades
• My walk with God
• Learning to play the ukulele
• BLOGGING!! 

Today I washed my hair and allowed my Mom to put in some Bantu Knots for me. Started off  a lil rough but it smoothed out. I used cheap Vo5 shampoo and condish (first pre-pooing with EVOO).After washing i mixed EVOO and coconut oil and placed it in my damp hair. I used a little carrot oil cream to moisturise. This is just to keep my hair detangled as i have to get it styled tomorrow. It is customary to see Caribbean girls with their bantu knots secured with hairpins or "twists" as they called in St. Lucia, to prevent breakage and keep hair manageable. {Cant wait to be locked !!!}

#totally random...I came across this African-German Artist called Nneka... I really Love African Culture/Music/Heritage and I'll be featuring alot of it on this blog..Here's a piece that gave me goosebumps. Her lyrics are really deep and speak about war and poverty and government isssues.. I <3 her!!

Nappy New Year!!

Hey everyone, Happy New Year!! This is my first year I'm starting as a complete natural, in 5 years...This is my second shot at blogging..The first was in 2009 and lets just say it wasn't that great.I have searched high and low for a blogger who has the type of locs I want with the type of hair I have..So why not create my own?? I am Afro-Caribbean with tightly coiled hair. I have been through texturizers, braids, plaits, needless to say tears and pain as well..Growing up the society's view of natural hair and locs did not deter me from wanting to loc my hair..My mother in particular, still dreads the fact that her only daughter will soon be closing her painful childhood memories of dreadful combing and "detangling" with a set of locs..In my younger days my classmates and i would talk about our agonizing experiences on "wash day"( Usually a weekend) Hair would be washed using a sulphate shampoo "conditioned", then allowed to dry fully before detangling. This of course came with screams, tears and of course spanking with the comb or brush.I felt as if my mother would be releasing all her frustrations on my poor head. (Writing this right now make chills race up and down my spine).Hair would then be slicked down with hair grease and styled. Thankfully i have made peace with my god given texture and I'm ready to move on to my next step. I have done research and I'm still doing research on  different locking methods and do's and don't.I will keep you posted as to my progress and setbacks in my journey and any other other topic of interest and relevance..Please subscribe!!!
